Rioja drinkers love a specific combination: red fruit gone slightly dried, vanilla and dill from American oak, soft tannin, and a wine built for the table rather than the cocktail hour. Two of those four survive dealcoholization; two don't. This page is honest about which — and, in a pleasant twist, the strongest Spanish producers in the non-alcoholic category are exactly where a Rioja drinker should look.

What survives from the Rioja profile
Keeps: the red-cherry-and-plum fruit, the food-first personality, the moderate frame — Rioja was never a monster wine, which helps enormously (why lighter reds translate best →). Loses: long oak aging's vanilla-and-coconut signature — extended barrel character rarely survives the process — and the warm, resolved texture of a well-aged crianza. Nobody currently sells a convincing dealcoholized "aged" red; what exists is young, fruit-led, and best judged that way.
The picks
1. Lussory Premium Merlot — the Spanish house
Spain | Merlot | Dry, soft-structured
Lussory is a Spanish producer, and it shows in the build: plummy, gently structured, a cocoa note standing in where oak used to be. Merlot rather than Tempranillo, but the two grapes' soft-red kinship is exactly why the sommelier's swap works. Of everything available, this is the pour that most resembles a young Spanish red on a weeknight table — and it doubles as the category's best cooking wine.

2. Oddbird Rouge — the reserva energy
Languedoc, France | Low-temperature vacuum process | 0.0%
French, not Spanish — but dark cherry, dried herbs, and pepper over real structure is the closest the category gets to a serious, savory dinner red. If your Rioja taste runs to reserva depth rather than joven fruit, this is the honest recommendation, and the labeled 0.0% settles the trace-alcohol question outright.

3. Noughty Rouge — the Spanish Syrah
Spain | Organic Syrah | Dry, savory
Spain again, via Syrah: blackberry, black pepper, and a firm tea-like grip that reads more "serious red" than most of the category manages. The pick for Rioja drinkers who chase savor and structure over softness.

Make it a table, not a tasting
Rioja's real identity is the food around it, and that part needs no translation: chorizo, jamón, roast lamb, aged Manchego, garlicky mushrooms. Rich, salty Spanish food is the best possible frame for a lighter red — the dish supplies body, the wine supplies freshness. Serve around 55–60°F and keep the glasses big.
How we chose
We weigh dealcoholization method, stated sugar levels (added sweetness faking body is the failure mode for soft reds), producer track record, independent consensus, and weekly verification against live listings. We haven't yet run our own formal blind panel — rankings will be updated and dated when we do. Full methodology on our About page.
FAQ
Is there a real non-alcoholic Tempranillo or Rioja? Dealcoholized Tempranillos exist in Spain's home market, but nothing with the availability and track record we require yet. "Rioja" itself is a protected term that requires the alcohol, so anything dealcoholized is Spanish-style by definition. When a varietal Tempranillo earns a place, this dated page will be updated.
What happened to the oaky vanilla flavor? Extended barrel character mostly doesn't survive dealcoholization — it needs alcohol's frame to sit on. Lussory's cocoa note is the nearest echo; nothing honest currently delivers crianza oak.
Which pick is closest to Rioja? Lussory for the soft, young-Spanish-red profile; Oddbird for reserva-style seriousness. Choose by which half of Rioja you love.
Do they work for cooking Spanish food? Yes — Lussory especially. And since the alcohol-cooks-off assumption is mostly false, a 0.0%-friendly kitchen is a real reason to keep one on hand.
