Grenache brings sweet red-fruit, white pepper spice, and high alcohol to blends, forming the base of Châteauneuf-du-Pape alongside Syrah and Mourvèdre. Thin-skinned and heat-loving, it also makes pale, savoury rosé across southern France and Spain.
